ENGLISH COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

AMERICAN FILM CLASSICS
20 weeks, 1/2 HS credit
Grade Levels: 10, 11, 12
This course consists of approximately 20 films which have  importance in American film history because of awards or acclaim. Each film has achieved acclaim for the film itself, for its director or for the performances of a particular actor or actress. Some films are also chosen because they illustrate a particular aspect of American culture or history. Finally, the assigned films are chosen as exemplars of a movie genre so that participants will become versed in different film movements and analyze how they impact or were impacted by American culture. Students will be expected to complete a research project based on a historical figure or event, write movie reviews, create a multi-media presentation and complete several quizzes and assignments based on film vocabulary, film history and film content.
 
ENGLISH/LANGUAGE ARTS I (NCAA approved)
40 weeks, 1 HS credit
Grade Level: 9
This required course provides exposure to a variety of literary genres such as short stories, novesl, poetry, drama and non-fiction through close reading instruction.  It focuses on grammar, usage, and other fundamentals of language as outlines in the Next Generation State Standards.  Students receive an introduction to the research process and gain considerable practice in written expression in preparation for the Common Core English Regents exam which is given in grade 11.

ENGLISH/LANGUAGE ARTS II (NCAA approved)
40 weeks, 1 HS credit
Grade Level: 10
This course builds on the reading and writing skills studied in English/Language I. The literature includes close readings of novels, short stories, poetry, drama, technical and informative texts. Students are given several assignments that mirror the Common Core English Regents exam which is given in grade 11.
 
ENGLISH/LANGUAGE ARTS III (NCAA approved)
40 weeks, 1 HS credit
Grade Level: 11
This course is the study of the development of American Literature as outlined in the Next Generation State Standards. Students are exposed to a wide variety of literary and informational texts to utilize and enhance their reading and writing skills fromthe previous year. The Common Core English Regents exam is given in June of the student's junior year.

ENGLISH/LANGUAGE ARTS III (College Level)
40 weeks, 1 HS credit, 3 SUNY Broome credits
SUNY Broome: ENG 110 CF1 31721 College Writing
Grade Level: 11
English 11 College Level is divided into two separate courses: English 110, a Fast Forward SUNY Broome course, and Advanced American Literature, a course offered for weighted credit, but not college credit. Students who enroll for English/Language Arts III must take both courses. Upon successful completion of the SUNY Broome course, a student receives 3 credits of college English.
PREREQUISITES: An overall average of 90 or above in Englsih 10 and teachers recommendations. In addition, students must receive a passing score on the SUNY Broome English Placement exam for English 110 college credit or earn an 85% or higher on English/Language Arts III Common Core Regents exam.  

ENGLISH 12 (NCAA approved)
40 weeks, 1 HS credit
Grade Level: 12
This course uses selected works of world literature, beginning with the ancient Greeks, to our time. This course is designed to prepare students for the rigors of critical thinking, reading and writing necessary to be college and career ready.

ENGLISH 12 (College Level) (NCAA approved)
40 weeks, 1 HS credit, 3 TC3 credits
TC3: ENG 101 Written Expression II
TC3: ENG 102 Intro to Literature
Grade Level: 12
English 12 College Level is divided into two separate courses, both offered by the TC3 College Now program. Students who enroll in College English 12 must take both courses. Upon successful completion of these courses, a student receives 6 credits of college English.
PREREQUISITES: An overall average of 90 or above in English 11 and teachers' recommendations.
