Welcome to Ms. Mona Shaevel's Communication Corner!
I invite you to work together with me to help your child
improve communication and language abilities.
In New York State, all children from 0-5 years are eligible to receive a FREE evaluation of their development in a variety of areas (not based on income and you do not need to be a U.S. citizen, only a resident of NYS). Areas include physical development (growth, gross and fine motor abilities), cognitive development (learning and thinking), communication (understanding and using words), social-emotional development (relating to others) and adaptive development (self-help skills, such as feeding).
If children qualify as needing services, services are also provided FREE at their homes, daycare settings and/or schools.
If you have concerns about your child or someone else's, please share this information. It is better to seek an evaluation and services earlier vs. later. Do not be concerned that your observations may be unfounded; it is better to err on the safe side and obtain the evaluation.
For children from birth to three years, contact your local county health department. For Broome County residents contact the Broome County Maternal Child Health Department at (607) 778-2851.
For children nearly three to five years, contact your local school district. For Chenango Forks district residents, contact the Special Education Office at (607) 648-7589.
