CFMS Tech 8 class holds online CO2 Car drag races

Students in quarter one of Adam Niemiec's remote Technology 8 class participated in the first online Technology 8 C02 Car Drag Race from Nov. 12-13.
Prior to the races, students learned how to design, engineer and build a car. They began by learning about pattern drawings and orthographic drawings. Students completed patterns for their cars and then sent them to Mr. Niemiec, who cut them out at school and sent a full kit of materials to each student's home so they could build their cars.
Students learned about woodworking, assembly and finishing procedures. They also learned about lift, drag, thrust and gravity, which all affect the car through aerodynamics.

They created their cars at home and then sent them back to the school. On Nov. 12-13, Mr. Niemiec set up a racetrack in the high school gym. There, he conduced C02 Car races with each of the cars while students watched via Zoom. Mr. Niemiec and his volunteers paired cars against each other and clocked their times, for a friendly competition between peers.

Some student volunteers helped Mr. Niemiec set up, run the races and clean up afterward. It was a fun couple of days and a great way to wrap up the first quarter of the school year.
