A collaborative effort between the district's music and technology departments has helped cut costs while providing better, more customized mouthpieces for musical instruments. Middle School band teacher Mr. Pace approached technology teacher Mr. Niemic with the idea of using 3D printers to create the mouthpieces for students who play the tuba, trombone, saxophone and trumpet. Using CAD software, Mr. Niemic was able to design the pieces and then build them on 3D printers. Once each piece was printed, Mr. Pace completed the process using a lathe to customize the sizing for each student, followed by hand sanding and polishing to create a smooth finished product. The custom sizing provides students with a mouthpiece that is best suited for their size and playing style, and the students are loving the results!
