CFE 5th graders travelled to the Anderson Center at Binghamton University for a concert performance by the Binghamton Youth Symphony Orchestra. The group is composed of area high school musicians and is currently in its 62nd season – making it one of the oldest such organizations in the United States. During this Introduction to the Orchestra program, Maestro Barry Peters explained the four instrument families, demonstrated the specific instruments in those families, and even let a few audience members take a turn conducting the ensemble! It was a great opportunity for our students to hear the sound of a full live orchestra, many of them for the first time. The musical selections ranged from Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker” (featuring dancers from The Dance Connection) to highlights from “The Greatest Showman”.
