The Chenango Forks High School Watercolor Art class recently created some beautiful artwork inspired by recipes that hold significance to their family or culture. They created recipe illustration cards, which visually represent the family recipe. This project was a unique way to celebrate cherished recipes.

This morning our high school physics students took advantage of the snowy weather and went outside to calculate the coefficient of friction on the snow-covered hill near the football field. Students took measurements including the angle of the hill, distance down the hill, and they timed how long it took to sled down. Using those numbers and their knowledge of forces on inclined planes, they were able to calculate the coefficient of friction between the sleds and the snow. A fun time was had by all!

Students in Advanced Placement Biology performed a technique called DNA fingerprinting with the help of a kit from Cornell University. Students compared DNA from a mother, baby and two possible fathers to determine the paternity of the child. Once isolated, the DNA was cut with restriction enzymes into fragments. The fragments were then pulled through a gel using an electric field to separate the DNA fragments based on size. The biological father was determined by matching banding patterns in the DNA that formed on the gel. This technique is used to show students how science can help solve issues of paternity testing, evolutionary relatedness, and crime scene investigations.

Recently students in our College Costa Rica/Climate class had an opportunity to hear from some special guest speakers. Chenango Forks alum Josh Black joined the class for a virtual visit, where he shared his undergraduate research at Eckerd College in Florida, working on artificial reefs to boost biodiversity and improve water quality in the canals of Central Florida. He also discussed his current work in the Florida Keys, studying the effects of rising ocean temperatures on fish populations and instances of spinning fish. The students also had an opportunity to visit Mr. Edwards' classroom, where they explored a live reef ecosystem seeing corals, anemones, and fish up close. Mr. Edwards highlighted the fragile environment they live in, along with the importance of preserving these ecosystems and the restoration efforts around the world to rebuild and sustain coral reefs.
